Collections 2 years after DVDs returned, No previous Notice

Hello,

I found a deliquent item on my credit report today for the amount of $110. The collection agency was representing Hollywood Video, stating I had movies that I returned late in February and they were collecting, (it's December). I never received any notice of a outstanding balance, either via mail, or phone. And Hollywood Video had my credit card on file and never made an attempt to charge for the late fee.

I paid the collection agency because I do not want any blemishes on my credit report, however is there anything I can do about this? Aren't you supposed to be contacted if you are past do on an account so that you can pay prior to going to collections? I know I returned the DVDs, however the collection agency couldn't tell me any further details other than which DVDs were out.
