Rate Rose From $38 to $55 After Paid Upgrade and New Modem

We had ATT DSL Service. The service was very slow and no functional. We complained to ATT and they said we can upgrade from basic to a "super fast" service. The rate would go up to $38/month plus we needed to buy a $106 modem. Service was frequently interrupted by "lost connection restart your browser" messages (approx every 20 min). This month the bill went up to $55 per month!!! We called and ATT said, "Oh, that rate was for 6 month only". We asked, we did not know this and why did we buy a new modem? ATT reply, "Sorry there is nothing we can do (this was after being on hold for 45 min)!!!
