"Doug Carter" came to my door he was red haired, 6ft, thin build, had freckled light skin, and a "skater kid" look. He had a Hispanic friend of the same look standing behind him who spoke little and never gave me his name. He told me he was starting as a communications major at the local university and that this was an assignment given to all starting freshmen. The goal was to buy books for children in the hospital and the more books he sold the more "points" he gained. I realized this was a scam a few minutes later and stopped the check after trying and failing to chase him and his friend down.

This was in San Luis Obispo.
