Did not receive entire security deposit back

I recently moved from this rental unit. I requested numerous times the return of my security deposit. I finally sent registered letter and finally did receive half of my deposit. Landlord claiming that my declawed cats had torn a 10 inch snag in the carpet. This snag was there when I moved in. Unfortunately for me I did not document this at the time. He probably got money from the previous renter for the same thing! @! This individual runs a contracting business and I wonder how many other people he has taken money from. It is too late for me. But please people, before you rent do a walk through with your potential landlord and do not leave or return the key until you have an exit walk through. There are alot of unscrupulous people out there.
