Delmarva Power required a lease from new tenants, a young couple that had never had electric in either of their names previously. Delmarva Power not only refused to turn on power siting the old tenants owed a bill; they required me, the landlord to speak with them directly and sent Delmarva Power staff to the house to see if they were lying about inhabiting the premises. When I elevated the issue and complained, using a mortgage application as an example. Michelle stated that Delmarva Power wasn't a mortgage company, but a utility and they didn't operate the same way. After three days and over 6 phone conversations they proved without a doubt using social security numbers that they were honest, legitimate tenants, Delmarva Power agreed to turn the electric on that day. There were no apology given. Reminds me of Gilda Radner on Saturday Night Live and the old AT&T monopoly..."We don't have to be nice, we're the phone company." Only this isn't funny. It's disrespectful to treat customers, assuming they are deadbeats at the onset and demanding they prove their honesty... Because of a former resident's lack of responsibility.
