Damaged car engine

I took car to repair shop, would not start. They check car out, said the only thing wrong with the car was the fuel pump. We said ok for them to fix it. They call my wife later said they needed to hold on to car for a day or two. Joe call back a day or so later said that the engine had thrown a rod. That was my mothers car who had just pass. The car was a 2002 chevrolet prizm with only 56,811 on it. She bought it brand new. How do you go from replacing a fuel pump to a blown engine. Something happen on their part. The engine and everything was fine when they check it out. They need to man up and make the wrong right
