Elease fo 401k due to retirement

After retiring called Merrill Lynch to request 401k funds and was told I had to wait 30 days after last day of employment and then additional 7 to 14 days for check to be processed. I have a medical procedure that I need to have done and wanted the funds asap and was told it was Wal-mart policy. I know for a fact they can step out of the hold of their policies whenever they want. They do whenever it suits them. I could understand if it was a few 100,000 but Wal-mart retirement isnot that great.in my case its less than 20,000. So whats the problem. Just do not think it is fair that they can hold on to our money for that long. They can do away with a person job at the drop of a hat but can't release what belongs to an associate before 30 to 45 days. I believe this to be a little one sided. They need to re visit their policy on this.
