Why Cable Companies Can Lock Customers Into Contracts

I have a question, I would like an answer about directv and other cable companies why do they have the right to lock you into a contract. It seems to me that you are not purchasing anything but their service and if you are dissatisfied you should be able to cancel at any given time and move to another provider. If I have a credit card I can cancel it at any time why not cable tv?
