Landlord is stealing from us

Our landlord has successfully stolen money from us.

The month of February, two weeks after my roommates and I dropped off our rent, our landlord alerted us that our rent check had bounced and we now owed an additional $85 in late fees. We rewrote the check, included the late fee and gave it to our landlord. After checking with the bank, we learned that our check had never bounced.in fact, our landlord never even attempted to deposit the original check at all.

So for the month of March, we had a money order made to avoid her claiming "the check bounced". March 31st comes around and our landlord tells us she never received our rent payment. Why she waited an entire month to tell us I'm not sure. She clearly either LOST it or STOLE it. There are cameras in our lobby, so there is footage of us dropping off our checks in the appropriate location. ON TIME.

I have live here for almost a year and I cannot wait to move out. When we first moved in, our unit was not ready. We didn't have smoke detectors, face plates for our outlets and our showers did not function properly. It took months for all of these issues to get fixed.

The safety of the building is another problem... My car has been broken into on 2 separate occasions, and the landlord refused to hire a security guard. Also, there was a shooting in front of the building a few days ago.

Susan refuses to give us the number for her superiors, so we hope this website can help us not only solve this issue, but put us in touch with those who can truly help us.
