Social Security Number Misuse

My lady and I were doing a rental search and found this agency in the process. We made contact for the purpose of obtaining a new residence. When I finished with the preliminary business and we got down to the final analysis of what would be required of us, we were informed that unless we released our social Security numbers to them we would not be eligible for rental applications. I informed Mrs. Grijalva that using a Social Security number for any purpose other than paying taxes or verifying eligibility for employment was a misuse of SS#. She continued to repeat over and over that if we did not release our SS# we could not get a rental application nor be considered. She would not budge. As a citizen I am very upset that so many agencies and companies are using our SS#'s for checking credit and think this is a valid use of SS#. I would refer you and those that are not aware of the rules regarding SS# to the USGOV website with reference to the collections and uses of SS#. Please inform the real Estate agents and companies collecting them they are mistaken and could be fined heavily by the US federal government for the misuse of the SS#. It would seem the practice has gotten quite out of hand as have the peoples collecting SS#'s. It is getting very tiresome explaining to these misinformed individuals that they are disqualifying me based on unlawful collection of data.
