Repossession after oral payment arrangement and forced post-dated checks

I know this is something you may not handle, but I have to tell as many people as I can. We have been living in three years of hell from Citi Financial Auto, who hired Santander Consumer USA to collect our car and truck payments. These two companies would call us 15 to 20 times a day, causing emotional stress. They forced us against our will to give them our checking account information so they could make deposits without telling us, which cost us additional fees and the closing of one of our accounts. We told them we did not want to pay this way, but they said that if we did not make post-dated checks, management would review our account for possible repossession. We wrote to them and the phone calls stopped, but our statements also stopped coming.

On January 3 I called and made oral arrangements to pay two payments by January 12, and they would change the due date and I would be current, acting in good faith on my part. But on January 4, in the dark of night, they repossessed my only way of going to work. We have been living in a home that has no central heat for two years out of fear of losing our cars. They took my car four months earlier. Our gas got cut off two years ago because we were forced to give them a payment instead of paying our gas bill. The company wants that bill plus a large deposit to turn it back on.

Do we not have any rights? If we are expected to do what we promise, why do the finance companies not have to do the same? If I orally agreed to make a payment in good faith, why do the finance companies not have to act in good faith? We do not own a car of any kind right now. I just do not want anyone else to have to live the way we have over the past three years. We have been abused, emotionally mistreated and threatened by these companies. We have been talked to as less than human. We have been asked why we do not pay our bills and told that they would have to call us. They forced us to live under moral duress and legal duress by doing things against our will.
