Two companies claim to be same lender after settlement paid

I paid off a settlement offer made by this company, and now another company says they are the same company but has no record of my settlement or payment. I spoke to the company I paid, and they said it was charged off in October. So I have two companies that say they are the same. One or both of these companies is committing fraud. I want to get my money back and pay what I owe, but it is proving to be a challenge.
