Recieved pop-up on computer saying that Windows Security Alerts were cancelled and that my computer was infected with trojans and viruses. I was instructed to activate the companys antivirus payable bycredit card in order to clean out the infection. Later checking on Google, I found out that this was a scam.

This not only a scam. IT IS A VIRUS! Windows Security had to clean the system, took 18 hrs to remove the virus. Do not install this program, regardless of what the "pop-ups" tell you!
