Miscellaneous

Received a letter and a check from Consumer Center Research (return address 28 W. 44th Street, NY, NY 10036, phone 718-247-9890). The check was for $1,306.29. The letter "invited" me to participate as a Customer Service Evaluator (Mystery Shopper). The going rate was identified as $300/week which would, in a few weeks go up to $400/week and could go as high as $600/week. The letter requested that the enclosed check be deposited and that the amount of $920 plus a service fee of $86 should be withdrawn. The recipient was to call the "service coordinator" at 718-247-9890 and get a "computer generated" name to whom to wire funds for this "evaluation."

What made me suspicious was that the letter was mailed in Canada and the bank was from Oklahoma, while the "company" was supposedly in New York. Therefore, I checked it out prior to doing anything, and will be taking the materials to local law enforcement for documentation and follow up. Hopefully my documentation of this experience will help others avoid this scam.
