Kept damage deposits on substandard apartment that was not being rented again

Imperial Group kept the damge deposits on their very poor apartment that I was forced to rent due to divorce. They mis-used the clause involving the notice required to terminate the rental areement. The lease had expired and they claimed that another moth's rent was due. The deposits that they kept were for an amount greater than one months rent. Having vacated well within the previous month and receiving a report that no damage was done to the apartment and that no cleaning would be necessary I was informed that they were not going to rent the aprtment again as the ownership was in forecosure. I payed a prorated rent for the week that was left in the month when I rented the place. I was not charged a prorated amount for the "late" notice. Notice was "late' because I had been hospitalized. Imperial Group had a legal right to keep the deposits up to one months rent. They had no right to the amount they kept which included a $150 pet deposit. They had a legal right but, especially since there was no financial stake for them, they did not have a moral right. They assumed correctly that I don't have the resources to fight them and the amount would not merit legal action. Shame on Imperial Group Property Management. They weren't even going to rent the apartment again.
