Ipped off - catalytic converte

I took my sons car for a trouble light and was told the catalytic converter needed to be replaced. Paid $1056.2weeks later my son takes the car to our local mechanic and says the repairs should not have been more than $600 some work was done poorly and they should have not done the work but referred us to a dealer as the part was still under warrenty.
