Target 96
Showing ID with cash payment

Miscellaneous

I have been a regular Target shopper for two decades, purchasing everything from clothing to cat food to batteries there. So it was shocking to be checking out with a purcahse of over $100 worth of merchandise, only to have the checkout clerk tell me I would need to show a valid photo ID. Allegedly there is some obscure store policy that purchasing computer software, even with cash, requires that the customers photo ID be entered into a store database. I asked to speak to a manager and "Lauren, " who was embarrassed enought to not give a last name, insisted that I would not be allowed to purchase computer software without allowing them to check my drivers' license, because they don't sell software to "minors." Of course I am a balding, slightly paunchy, white-haired 55-year-old who has not been carded at a bar for 30 years, so I suspect the concern was less for my innocent youth than it was for building a database of customer drivers' license data for obscure purposes. At any rate, until or unless this policy is reversed, I will never spend another cent at Target Stores. I value my privacy, and I respect the use of common sense.
