Forms that were send back that came to late

They were to send me forms to help me in filling for a loan modification on my mortgage the day after i send them $450.00. The forms did not reach me until three weeks later. I paid them on Sept 3 and did not received the forms until Sept. 25 2010 so I stopped payment on the check posted for Sept 17 for $450.00. When I did receive forms I then return them because it was to late then They have called me asking for the other check for $450.00 and I feel I don't owe them anything because I returned the paper work to them without opening it.
