Internet Scam. Promise to repay money lent

I met a woman online and after chatting for several months, we discussed her coming to visit and possibly stay in Canada.
After several failed attempts at getting her here, she decided that she wanted to sell her house in the UK and move to Canada with me.
There were taxes owing on her house, we discussed a deal where I would help to pay the tax so that she could sell and I would be an equal partner after the sale was final and she was here.
As soon as the house was supposedly sold, we mysteriously lost contact.
I am out a substantial amount of money. Can anyone help me? What can I do?
