Rear coil spring failure

I can not think that the trunk coil springs of the X3 are susceptible to early failure. Our local technician showed me the underside of the damaged spring from the client having a 2004 X3 with only 83,000 miles. On the trip to the neighborhood BMW seller, something representative when requested stated something similar to "certain does occur with BMWs and it is because of the road-salt within the northeast". The spring alternative isn't included in guarantee. I'm informed that BMW desired about $1000 to displace the faulty rises about the vehicle. I've an 1987 El Camino that's been a regular driver since new. It's coil springs and about 265,000 kilometers and it has the initial rear coil springs. Our '04 X3 has about 62,000 miles. Awaiting the boot to fall.
