Plumping Company Charges

On February 9, I made a call to a local licensed plumping company to investigate a sewer odor from a major water leak which occurred at my home on February 5 and resulted in damaged to three floors. Upon their investigation, it was determined there was so much water released on the 5th causing the odor. Upon further investigation where the leak occurred, the plumbing company provided a quote of $928.00 to repair the 6”x ½ pipe and to install a new shut off valve for the toilet. I then was called again by the plumbing company that there was a leak and a potential problem with the hot and cold water lines to the sink; those lines are approximately 6”x ½ pipe in length. I was provided another quote of $900.00 for that work.

The plumber was at the house for 4.5 to 5 hours total. After thinking and discussing with my wife and checking with other companies, this was really a high price for the amount of time and material ($50.00). I called the plumbing company (St. Paul Plumping & Heating) and told them I was upset with the price and I had checked around and their price was very high and their labor cost was over $450.00 dollars a hour. I was told a price had been quoted before the work was done and I had the opportunity to say no.

He also said they have union employees and that's why their price is high. I checked with the St. Paul Plumber's Union and no way do their plumber’s make $450.00 an hour. I think we were taken advantaged of because of the circumstances at that time. We just had a major issue at our home and did not want to have another plumbing problem.
