Lack of Supervision for our 6th grade Student Ambassador While in Holland

My son is an alumni of the trip to Amsterdam over the summer of 2006. He was an ambassador in the sport of wrestling. At that time, he had just turned 13 and was going into 7th grade. We were assured that PTPI would provide full time supervision and that he would be exposed to an inspirational combination of sport and culture. Before the trip, he was on the honor roll at school and was a very happy and well adjusted young boy.

Since that summer, Paul has struggled socially and academically to the point of failing out of 9th grade. He has been in and out of five different schools and has been expelled for drugs. After extensive personal and family counseling, it has been discovered that that the onset of this decline was not coincidental. He revealed that the trip to Amsterdam with PTPI was not supervised at all.in fact, his adult chaperone injured her arm, in San Diego, and never made the trip. His non sporting time was spent with a group of much older (up to High school aged) boys who exposed this 13yo boy to regular marijuana, alcohol, explicit rap music and discussions of sex. He was told not to reveal this. Our family would never had known if Paul's counselor did not confided in us this spring.

Prior to this trip, our son was an honor roll student, at a local Christian School, who in his words " did not even know what sex was".

Needless to say, our entire family is very angry about PTPI's complete lack of supervision and the damage that it continues to have on our son's development. Parents should be informed if supervision is routinely not as advertised. Or if circumstances change that affect PTPI's ability to live up to the ideals of their mission. Parents must be allowed to make an informed decision in these situations!
