Lied about ability to pay rent. Sob story allowed them to move in on small deposit. They have not paid any rent at all. Evicted by sheriff 7/8/09

Bryan and Heather obviously seemed like the perfect couple with their small son for our community. Extremely close to their family, especially the very sick Grandma, they claimed to do lots of free community work. Heather is a "permanent makeup" artist so she said she does free work for cancer victims. Bryan has (or had) his own company called Sequence in Roseville California, doing event planning and lots of charity work. Heather was tearful upon our first meeting because she said her son had just been diagnosed that day with dwarfism. He is small but is well proportioned and does not appear to be a dwarf.in return for a week of free rent, Heather and Bryan agreed to re-screen the patio door, re-hang the master bath light shades after I had cleaned them, and reset a loose tile in the laundry room. Being arthritic, these were difficult chores for me and they were more than happy to help in order to get the wk. Of free rent. They paid the cleaning/security deposit with a cashiers check. One week later on the first of May, they did not send the rent. When I phoned, Heather said she would have to "ask Bryan what he was going to do about that". She also quickly stated that Grandma had just died. Four days later, I left two messages for Heather to immediately call me re. The rent. Bryans phone now does not work. Heather returned my call about 5 hours later and said they could not pay the rent because someone owed them $40,000 and had not paid them. She said she would call that evening between 6-7pm to discuss it more. Needless to say, that was the last I heard from either of them until the very end of my eviction process.
In mid May I contracted an attorney for an eviction of Bryan and Heather.

They avoided all attempts to be served, resulting in obtaining an additional order from the court to allow a posting to be attached to the door, giving them 15 days to move out. Of course the law drags this out further, but shortly after the 15th day, Heather called and suggested they give me one of their cars to cover the rent. A 1990ish jeep is hardly worth what they owe me. The Placer County Sheriff finally posted a notice on the door stating the day of eviction. When I arrived to the rental property, they had moved out.

They had not done any of the agreed upon small tasks for the first week of free rent. Though they did not "trash" the place, it indeed must be repainted entirely and deep cuts in the walls where they probably hit with furniture needs to be replaired. Trash bags everywhere. Food in the refrigerator. Well, you most likely know the rest if you are on this website. But here comes the worst of all. They stole my cat. Bats, my hugh black cat loved his home. Though he had been relocated to my daughters new home, he walked 13 miles back to his home. Bryan and Heather thought he was a really nice cat and wanted their son to have a pet if the cat wanted to stay at the house. I provided food, litter box, bed, dishes, pet carrier, etc. It was agreed that if the cat became a bother to them, I would come pick him up again. It also was agreed that the cat still belonged to me. Yes, the cat is gone as well as all his personal items.

So I have learned a hard lesson. Don't believe the sob stories. These people owe me about $5,000 in back rent, attorney fees, cleaning, etc. Watch out for these two. They never appear together. Heather is soft spoken and a master with the tears. She appears abused as she is the only one who called or made a physical appearance. She makes little eye contact and does not stand up straight - almost cowering. I never spoke to nor saw Bryan after I gave him the keys to the house. Oh, yes, don't bother with referrals. No one is dumb enough to give a reference who will say anything bad about them. I will pursue these two for the rest of my life if necessary to get my due payment and my cat.
