"Communications Contest" door-to-door, contest, magazine sales

Miscellaneous

There is a tall blonde young man wearing a gold cross necklace currently canvassing in the Eugene area saying that there is a "communications race" going on in Eugene and he is currenlty 'winning'. He goes on to say there are 150 young people moving through the area and they will all be knocking on doors in the neighborhood as a part of this effort to win $1000 and a free trip to somewhere (the location changed every time he went over it). He could not produce any information on the company sponsoring the campaign - except to show me the imprint on the bottom of his receipt book. He told me that if i ordered Wine Spectator I would get a free bottle of wine delivered with the last magazine. Sure. He wanted cash very badly, as he would get his points today and probably 'win' the contest - "the first time anyone had done so in five years".
When I said i was interested in helping him and would he come back tomorrow so I could consider who I might give a gift subscription to he got very agitated and said he is not allowed to return. The whole program is based on first impressions - that is why it is a communication race. And that " it is too bad I don't want to help out a positive young person". So came right to the internet to check out the company.
