Advertised $35 Price Became $69.72 Bill for Elderly Father

My father, who is in his 80's, responded to a TV ad for DirecTV for service around $35.00. When he got the bill, it was $69.72. Upon calling, we learned that you have to have an Internet account registered with directv.com to apply for the "rebate," which is only good for one year out of an 18-month agreement.

I asked why they verbally promote the $35.00 monthly service with more HD than cable and do not mention that the rebate has to be applied for online and is only good for 12 months. I was told, "That's in the fine print on the TV ad." As an entrepreneur myself, I never relied on misleading the public to sell my services based on fine print. I would further suggest that unethical corporations that do so will lose clients in the end.

The cancellation fee is $20 monthly for the remainder of the agreement, which is currently $300 for him. Do yourself a favor and go to the Dish Network web site, which I just verified is cheaper from their web site comparison and does not use misleading advertising. After the fact, I also found out that DirecTV has a history of false advertising.

I for one will never conduct business with DirecTV, and I would bet a dollar to a donut my father will have switched to The Dish Network before his contract even expires. ;)
