Magazine sales, scam, charming salesman, door-to-doo

My husband answered the door this afternoon and found a very charming and charismatic young man who told him a story about how he's trying to become a better person by helping to raise money for children in need. He kept asking my husband questions about what he does for work and what life experiences he gained from his first job, stuff like that. My husband indicated that he did not want to spend any money but the man insisted that it was not much money and that it would be for a worthwhile cause. The salesman presented him with a list of magazines from A-Z that he could pick from, and said that he could even send the magazines to a hospital or something.

When my husband came inside to grab a check, I told him I had an uneasy feeling about this and that I remember a similar visit a few years ago when I had ordered a magazine, which never arrived. When I had tried to contact the company, they never got back to me and I told him this felt like a scam. My husband said that he just wanted to give the man some cash so that he would go away and leave us alone. Once the man gave him a "receipt", I googled the company name and realized it definitely is a scam and we were duped! I read other people's reports about this company (and their aliases) and realized the salesman deployed the same techniques that others have mentioned: he indicated that our neighbor contributed as well, he was asking personal information (wanted to know if we have kids), and he mentioned that he used to have the same car as us. Please be aware!
