Where did this come from and when will it stop?! Everywhere

Miscellaneous

So the calls started about 2 years ago. They kept calling my dads house. Started off as once a month, then once a week, now they call everyday.
I received computer generated messages on the answering machine followed by a call from a man who left his number to reach him personally regarding the debt. My father took his number and I called him back. I got his voicemail. I left a message asking him to stop calling my fathers number and gave him my cell phone number. Asked very politely to never call my father's house again. I never got a return call from him... Just more phone calls to my father's house. I called them and gave them the reference number they left which the lady yelled across the room to someone else to look it up for her.

First she told me I owed $20,000! I gasped and she asked for the # again. That time she got it right and said I owed $1700 on a mastercard that was opened in 1998 (not $20,000) but for the next minute they were offering a deal where I could clear the debt by paying $512. I do recall that card but I thought I paid it off before I moved from Alabama to Indiana in 2000. I asked her when the last payment on the card was made and she said May. Huh? The last payment I made was in 2000! I looked at my credit report, it had been charged off years ago. I told her and she asked which credit report I received. All three. She said she didn't know what I was talking about because she didn't have access to credit reports. I asked her why all the sudden they were calling me but I had not received any statements. She said they had been sending me statements to my old address in Alabama... That's funny because I had my mail forwarded for a year after I left and never received a thing.

So I asked her to send me a statement of some form that I could look over. She said she couldn't send that information but she would send a demand letter. Still haven't received it. I asked her how they had my dad's new number but they did not send a statement to the Indiana address? She couldn't answer that either. I asked how long that one minute deal would last and she said it was over but she could still authorize the payment for the reduced amount. I told her "nice try but I will need this in writing first". She hung up on me!

Then the next day, and the next, etc. More Phone calls! My father told them I had returned their call to which they replied " no she hasn't, there is no such record in our system" and continued to argue with my dad until the NCO rep hung up on my dad!!! So my question is, can these charges be for real? When will the calls stop? Should I just pay it to get them to leave me alone? I'm getting very irritated and aggrivated!
