Chain-Stores Giveback Promo — SCAM!

My husband recieved an "Official Notification" stating that he won $10,000.included with the letter was a check for $2,759 and instructions to call the "claims representative" Mr. Scott Freeman at 1-416-839-1834 who will answer any questions.

We called this, (by the way it is a cell phone number out of Toronto, ON) and were told that my he won by being randomly selected electronically from a pool of shoppers at the point of sale in any of the 71 participating departmental stores nationwide. He said when my husband used his debit or creditcard, the store reciept number was entered into the drawing.

Mr. Freeman said he has cleared the hold on the $2,759 check and we could deposit it any time. He then said to call him back the next day to get the information to pick up a cashiers check from MoneyGram. We asked what the catch was, if they needed our account info or soc sec # or anything like that and he told us no. He said that we would recieve a 1099 tax form at the end of the year to pay the taxes on the winnings.

We have not called him back today yet, I knew this had to be a scam! It just so happens that I work for the same bank that the check was drawn on and verified that it is not valid. I am curious to hear what he has to say when I call back today. Not sure if I am going to bother though.

I have to admit though, the check was very good. It looked very official and even had all the security features such as the watermark etc...

Looks like its the same scam with a different company name.
