Shady, fast talking, door to door magazine sales

On a Saturday, a young man came to my front door and stated he was from a local collage debate team. The young man had said that he was out trying to meet 100 people in the neighborhood and I was number 72. He had also stated that he was doing this as part of his debate team and he lived just around the corner with his mom and would be going back to school in a week. He talked about the debate team being in the finals and will be attending a competition in Italy.

He then said that in order to attend he needed to raise half of the cost for the trip.in order to do this he provided a list of magazines that he was selling. Since many people already have subscriptions to magazines, he said he and his mother came up with the idea that they would take subscriptions and mail them to our military in Iraq. He commented on my 2 star flag hanging in the window and said his brother was over there right now. This is when, I am embarrased to say, I fell for his scam since I had no intention of getting anything from this young man until that time. He mentioned that some tax deduction info would be sent out to me in a couple of days since I was donating to the troops. Once he left, I checked online to see about the business name of the company and found it on usacomplaints.com. Wish I would have thought to do that first.

I paid with a check and noticed that everyone else had paid with cash... He said he got an extra bonus for a cash payment. Anyway, I will be putting a stop pay on my check today. I'm sure after reading these reports that no military personell is going to be getting a magazine from this young scam artist!
