A check for $5,799, addressed to me. Unfortunately, the check was drawn on a defunct bank!

Miscellaneous

A letter arrived in a plain envelope with a Canadian stamp on it. There was no return address on the envelope. The window showed a check for $5799 addressed to me, along with an explanatory letter, with Publisher's Clearing House at the top. This check was said to be a "certified check to cover any outstanding fees that thas not been paid by PCH directly." I was directed by the letter to call a "Representative", one Mr. Charles Henwood, at 888-813-5672 to receive instructions on how to process the payment of these "outstanding fees". Oddly enough, I was given a "security code" number, and the name of an Internal Revenue agent "handling your file" named "Mr. Harvey Armstrong", with a contact number of (514) 699-2389. Upon dialing the number I received no answer, but could leave a message. I was directed in boldface print not to deposit the check prior to discussing the matter with Mr. Henwood. Nevertheless, I took it to my friends at the bank to check out.By means of a phone call, the check was quickly determined by our bank to be invalid, since it was drawn on Lasalle Bank N.A., which is no longer in business, and whose accounts are now handled by Bank of America. The Bank of America agent stated to my bank friends that she had received phone calls from 6 banks just today regarding these checks. I am glad I was not ripped off by these clowns, and warn any and all against this cheap scheme.
