Consumer Incentive Promotions
Dishonest and Misleading

Miscellaneous

I responded to some spam asking me to "fill out a survey" in return for a free gift card. The survey was supposed to take "a few minutes" but actually took nearly a half hour, and I'm pretty fast.

Only then do you find out that to qualify you must respond to six offers, two each from the Silver, Gold and Platinum lists. They do tell you that some of the offersn require money, or represent trial offers which, when the trial runs out if you have not cancelled will cost you.

What they don't tell you, is that by the time you get to the Platinum section (at this point your investment in time alone is two hours or more) NONE of the offers are free. There is no way to fulfill the requirements for you "FREE" card without spending money.

Several of the companies represented on the list are VERY tricky about what they will charge you and when. REG.net in particular charged me 59.90 for some PDF downloads I never got, because I didn't contact them before the trial period was over. They also refused to refund it afterward.

So, while CIP does offer a certain amount of disclosure, the biggest lie is that they are "giving" away anything for free. Even though their graphics show a gift card with "FREE" all over the place, and explanations of how they are able to offer this card "for free", they clearly know that no one can complete the requirements without spending something.

It ended up costing me hundreds in fraudulent bank charges, overdrafts, etc.; not even counting the 40 or fifty hours it took to try to run some of this crap down (not always successfully—see above)
