Magazines for children's hospital scam

Today, May 20th, a young man came to my home in Reno, Nevada asking me to subscribe to two magazines and in return he would help me do chores around the house such as yardwork and cleaning windows. I told him I could only subscribe to one but he would still help me with chores. At first, I felt uneasy about it and then he told me that I could order childrens magazines to be donated to the childrens hospital for the kids. I wrote him a check for $48 after hearing the story he told me. I asked how he could be contacted and he gave me his "cell phone number" which I called right after he left. I called and it ended up being a wrong number. Then I searched the company name on the internet but there was no website. I typed the company name into google and complaint came up. I stopped the payment on the check right away and definitely learned my lesson.
