Just For Me / Trilegant Corporation Surprise membership renewal notice

In the mail today was a card from Just for Me indicating that my membership was about to be renewed and that for my conveinence the fee would be billed automatically to my account unless I canceled before April by calling the listed number.

Problem is that I had no idea what the membership was for, when it was initiated, which credit card was billed or how much the initial billing was. So, first I checked online to be sure I wasn't calling a number that would end up ripping me off through the phone company and then dialed it for information.

Within a few minutes I was actually talking to a person on the line who called himself Vance (or Vince) and he informed me that my membership had been initiated on 2/23/07 after they had received a positive response on a preprinted check for $8.

I informed him that was not so because I have never responded to any of those promotions, and told him to cancel my membership and not bill me again. He tried to sell me a "special deal" which I steadfastly declined and he then said he cancelled my membership and gave me a confirmation code #.

I will have to check back in my records and see if I can find the initial charge which was never authorized by me.
