Pennytree Apartments ripoff

The manager of this apartment complex (Kat Conway) informed me verbally that a deposit of $100 (of which all but the $35 application fee was completely refundable) would hold my potential apartment for me. Understanding that the total cost of move-in was $250, I handed over a $100 money order and a $150 money order in good faith.

Upon learning that there was a small issue pertaining to the results of the credit check, I was told that I would need an additional deposit of $625 (one months rent) to be split into two payments. One payment due on the day of move-in, and the second due a month later. I agreed to try and come up with the additonal deposit.

Two days later and after careful consideration, I attempted to contact Ms Conway to let her know that I was no longer interested in taking the apartment, because it would severely handicap me finacially and I did not want to risk putting myself in any binds going forward.

Unfortunately, I was unable to pass this information to her due to the office being shut down four days in observance of Thanksgiving (November 24th through the 27th).

First thing Monday morning (November 28th) I informed her of my decision. She immediately told me that NONE of my money would be returned. Understandably upset (this money represented a week of my work at minimum wage in retail), I attempted to put a stop payment on the money orders. This was not possible as the money orders were cashed on November 22nd (just two days before thier holiday shutdown).

When asked for the owners name and phone number, I was abruptly told by Ms Conway that this was private information and she was not allowed to give it out.

This irritates me considerably, as this company did NOTHING to deserve a penny of this money. I didn't even due a walk-through of the potential apartment!
