Ripoff Sales People not swayed by Sedation

Miscellaneous

I now know why they ask outpatients to be watched over for 24 hours after they are sent home from the hospital after surgery. It's not to make sure they don't have medical problems: it's to make sure they don't write checks.

I live in a security apartment building that does not allow solicitors. I had a minor surgery on a Friday, and was passed out at home. The only person I could get to take me home from the clinic was ill and she went home in order not to make me sick. So, I am fast asleep when there is a knock on my door. I was so disoriented that I actually ansewred it. Standing there was the fastest taking magazine salesman I had ever come across, giving me the whole story on "points" and "Cancun" and "voting for him". He was talking like I was his best friend. Being very diltued, I told him to go away since I had just had surgery and I was very tired. Nice try in my part, but he just walked in and kept talking fast.

Then, his friend, a early twenties female, showed up and proceeded to start playing with my cat. I think she wanted to sell magazines to my cat, too. This all being far too much for me to deal with, they were able to talk me into a renewal of my current magazine and an additional magazine to boot. I told them that I didn't have any money because I had to pay for this surgery, but the way they explained it, I didn't have to pay right away, eventhough they still needed two checks for the subscriptions.By this time, I am ready to fall over, and they are still talking, commenting on all my stuff and how cool it was. I almost offered them each a guitar to leave. So, I ended up writing two checks to get these people out of my house so I could go back to sleep.

When I was conscious and lucid again, I looked up the name of the company on the internet and found all the fraud reports. My sister came over to check on me, and I made her take me to the bank to cancel the checks. The bank guy suggested that I just close the account to make sure. So that's what I did.

Lession One for You: Don't answer your door when you live in a security apartment building. Most likely, it's a magazine sales person who got in on the sly.

Lession Two for Me: Keep someone with you for the recommended 24 hours after you have been sedated. It will save you from having to close your checking account.
