Charged rent for months after I moved out - reported to credit agency when I made special arrangements to break lease

I lost my job when I had to undergo chemotherapy for non-hodgekins lymphoma and I explained to them that I was going to have to break my lease because I was unable to work. They made it seem like they were sympathetic to my situation and that as long as I paid the rent for the month and moved out by the 5th of the next month it would be ok.

It was hard enough on my as it was. I am single and was going alone regularly over an entire summer for treatments. I paid the rent (albeit 2 days late because I couldn't make it before office closed on friday.) and moved out on time. I even packed my own home in the middle of a run of chemo. I even mailed my keys to them the day I left.

Six months later, and conveniently after the whole matter had gone to court (and I never received summons at my new address), I receive a collection notice stating that I owed $2000 for two months of rent, legal fees, and a broken lease fee. One of those months I had paid for (and had the slip showing where I had to go downtown to pay it late) and the other month was AFTER the date they said I had to move out. How could I be living there when they gave me a date to be out by?

Unfortunately, I don't have all the records anymore because I lost alot in the months after my move due to hospitalization. Thankfully, I am in remission now but probably won't be able to find an apartment because they reported that I owe past rent. Just goes to show you... Don't trust anyone - get everything in writing.
