US Cellula
Consumer Report

Miscellaneous

I've been a us cellular customer since 1992. A few years ago, i signed up for a data plan, paid a lot of money for a data capable phone.US Cellular didn't require a new contract, -which they advertised in print, on tv, and emails-.'Wow! Look how great we are!' One VERY big perk is the phone upgrade 'reward.' (they also toot there horn and advertise this as well.)

Today, I looked online to choose the phone I wanted as my upgrade and SURPRISE, I have to sign a new contract to upgrade my phone.
I was really looking forward to the upgrade.
I spoke with customer service, a supervisor, and the customer relations.

Each said the same thing: 'too many people got their upgraded phone and left a day later. We cannot afford this so we are requiring contracts.

They made this change a week ago!

I've seen ads on tv all week celebrating the rewards program, the upgrade, etc. No mention of 'contract required for upgrade.'

They said I may pay full retail for a phone and no contract will be required. I think they should pay me for the value lost.

Unfortunately I'm going to switch to a different provider.US cellular has always been pricey, they aren't keeping up with the increases in service for less money which is what all of their competitors are doing. Yeah, I'd really like a high priced 2 year contract!
