A Scammer called a friend, who relies on me for his tech support, and told him that Microsoft had reported his computer as having a problem needing fixing. So my friend allowed the Scammer access to his computer via TeamViewer and "clean up" the computer. During the 2 hours the Scammer was on the phone with my friend, he convinced my friend to pay $159 for virus services for a year AND my friend gave his credit card.

After 24 hours of reflection, my friend realized what happened and called AmEx to cancel the card and block the charge. The company name on the charge was "Plimus eCommerce". AmEx didn't have any more information about the company... No phone number, no address; this is not unusual.

Looking over the computer, I'm not finding any viruses, trojans, nor spyware. It seems the Scammer didn't do anything malicious except lie about the reason for the call and convincing my friend to part with his money. The Scammer did install AVG which I uninstalled. It was noted by my friend that the Scammer had an Indian accent.

Of course, my friend didn't get the Scammer's name nor any contact information. (The friend is not computer nor scam savvy even though he owns a successful business in town.) It's sad that there are low-lifes who prey on the less informed.
