Miscellaneous

A young gentleman came to our door with a whole story set out about he was earning points for college books by selling magazines. He also had ID and lots of paperwork. I should have been suspicious when he said he goes to a local college but his ID has nothing to do with the college. He was very personable but we didn't want any subscriptions. He showed us we could donate a Thomas the Train magazine for kids or a kids hospital. We agreed to it because he was a very nice kid, so we wrote a check for $29.50. I asked if this was the total amount and he said yes. When he left I was looking at the reciept and there was a balance due of $21.85 and all the information on it, including the signature, was not mine. Some other lady's name, phone number and address was on the reciept. I didn't sign anything at all. We cancelled our check and tried calling the company several times on different phone numbers but of course no answer. They provided a fax number but that didn't work either. I am mailing them their reciept to cancel the order today, along with my lawyer's business card. This is definitely a scam, and has taught me a lesson. You can't trust anyone at your front door. I am no longer giving anything to anyone unless I know them. Lesson learned.
