State Energy Conservation
Pool Not Hot Enough

Miscellaneous

We called State Energy Conservation out to see about heating our swimming pool with solar energy or a heat pump. We were spending about $4,000 per year heating our pool with propane and it was driving us crazy.

Ron from State Energy came to our house and talked to us about a heat pump. We like to keep the pool at about 85 to 87 degrees all year long. He stated that to provide exactly the same heat as the gas heater with a high efficiency electric heat pump would cost about $2,000 per year, or about half as much as the cost of the propane. That was still too much for operating cost.

So we chose to heat the pool with solar heating panels. They installed their Sunfire solar panels on our south facing roof at the back of the house. We had to turn the system off during the summer because the pool was going over 90 degrees even though it is screened. But in the winter, the pool was only 84 degrees. While our neighbor's pool at the same time was 75 degrees with no heater, we thought we would have more heat in the winter months.
