Miscellaneous

My 73-year old mother's Yahoo.com email account was compromised on June 18th, and Yahoo automatically locks down her account. Mom can't log in today, and after several attempts to reset the password herself calls a Yahoo! Tech support phone number she had written down that is probably 4 years old and no longer used by Yahoo.

But is *is* in use by one "Global Tech Help" who answers (from India) when Mom dials, and they then proceed to convince her to allow them to remote into her 10.4.11 iMac using Logmein123.com. Whereby they..

(1) ask what her "secret questions" are in Yahoo
(2) reset her password
(3) add a secondary email (kattynull@gmail.com) to her account - I have no idea who that is
(4) obtain her credit card info and proceed to bill her $299.99
(5) ask her for her cell phone number
(6) ask for her Facebook Login credentials

At which point Mom contacts me (while STILL on the phone with these jokers), I drive to her home, physically shut the computer down and when I ask what it is they think they're doing, they disconnect from the phone conversation.

We cancelled her Credit Card and I scrubbed her Yahoo email clean of the secondary mystery email address, and so on.

As an I.T. Tech support SysAdmin, my opinion is that this "Globaltechhelp.com" is a scam. Can't Ping the IP address. URL doesn't show in Lookup.
