Charged 2 Debit holds (total $250) for one tank of gas

This morning I purchased a full tank of gas ($62.48) and in checking my account in the afternoon found that I was charged a $125 charge twice on my account. I took my receipt and copy of my transactions into the station an was told by the cashier since I used my albertsons card (discount) and my debit card I was charge the hold for each swipe! The Albertsons card only shows what my discount should be (in this case 5 cents) and is not related to the payment for the transaction. He put me on the phone with the manager who gave me the same story. This could have overdrawn my account, she advised me it could take up to 5 days to adjust on my account once my gas charge goes thru. Why is it ok to hold over $250 for a $62.48 charge?
