I'm in California. I ordered one year subscription for This Old House from door-to-door salesperson on 2/1. Salesperson seemed like a nice, sincere young man. Later found out I could get same subscription for 1/4 the price I paid. Faxed cancellation on 2/4. Called company on 2/27 because I noticed our check was cashed on 2/5. Representative on phone told me the cancellation fax was "illegible". Well, you'd think they'd follow up on that and ask for another fax, instead of proceeding to cash the check. (This is what I thought, anyway, prior to discovering the history of this company and its record of scamming folks all over the country.) I was asked to email proof of the cancelled check to "expedite" a refund. Emailed copy of cancelled check and bank debit statement to oppsales@hotmail.com. Jennifer responded on 2/28 that I would receive my refund in 4-6 weeks. On 4/24, I emailed asking about status of my refund. Jennifer responded on same day that "we are having banking problems from closing our banking account" and they would send a money order at the end of the week. Today, 5/12, I finally googled Opportunity Sales and found out about their abysmal BBB rating and track record. I'm not expecting to see my money back ever, but I did email them today and inform them I'm filing a complaint with FTC, BBB, and CA state atty. Office on 5/24 if I don't have a valid check/money order in hand by then. I'll probably also notify the local police department.
