Fake internet modem speed test with offer to speed it up for $

Internet & Web

I ran my new cable modem through download speed tests on several sites. It was always 25.5 MB/S. I ran the test at this outfit three times and it was always ONE MB/s, 4% of the real speed. Then it suggested a free trial of their "speed up" software and said I should run it again after installing.

I figured their junkware would merely report to their server that it could now show the real, fast speed so that idiots would be impressed and pay for the scamware. Rather than install god-knows-what, I looked it up online and sure enough, this is a fraudulent outfit that does things far worse than even this.

This is uniblue, the same company that pops up ads that look like windows dialog boxes reporting "system errors" which they offer to fix if you give them your credit card. This is the kind of thing that happens in a so-called "free market"— evil people are "free" to lie to you and steal from you, and its perfectly legal.

If the government cared as much about protecting real people as it does cutting the taxes of the rich, they'd arrest the guy who runs this scam (I found his name but don't remember it), take all his money, and put him in prison. But they don't.
