Hughes Net
Direcway Service doesn't always work - Lousy Customer support located in INDIA - Collection agency is after ME now!

Internet & Web

Beware, there is a reason Consumer Reports rates Hughes Net DEAD LAST on their list of Internet Service Providers in the USA.
After having Hughes Net for close to 4 years, I had to cancel and change to Wildblue. I just HAD to know if there was something better out there. Where I live, there is No DSL, No Cable, No Broadband, No Cell service. Just dial up, or those expensive "satellite" services. At times, Hughes Net can be SLOWER than dial up. And I'm not even talking about exceeding your threshold. Those times your service just stops for 24 hours.
I paid $700 for the equipment and agreed to 2 years (though never saw a written agreement). I agreed to pay a terriblly high price of $55 per month. After about 2 years of frustratingly slow speeds, I decided to "upgrade" to a faster modem and more expensive monthly plan. So at nearly $70 per month, I thought things would improve. Wrong. Things got worse. The service would just stop working out of the blue, for days. Tech support is a JOKE. After giving your phone number a few times to an automated system, you finally get "patched through" to a fuzzy connection somwhere in the far east. And, yes, I am sure it is India. Even though the person introduces themselves as "Harry", or "Bob", or what ever other common American name you can think of, you are still talking to someone on the other side of the planet who sits in front of a computer screen talking calls from annoyning Americans all day to save the CEO of Hughes Net a buck.
Tech support was never able to get the thing going. I would unplug, re-plug, re-boot, you name it. Nothing ever worked.in the end, I was always told that I was being sent to "Advanced Technical Support" and someone there would call me back in 2 busniess days. No sense of urgency at Hughes Net as you can see. And conveniently, 2 busniess days is just long enough for the system to "fix itself".
After this happend a half dozen times over the course of a year and a half, I decided I had enough. I decided to cancel, and go with the only other satellite provider I knew of... Wildblue.
After 3 1/2 years as a loyal customer of Hughes Net, and a total of over $3,700 invested in my internet service with Hughes Net... They decided I should have to pay an early termination fee of $300.
I did not agree to the charge. But it showed up on my credit card statement anyways. I disputed that charge with my credit card company, and got it reversed a month later.
2 months after that, I got a letter from a collection agency for that same $300.
I am still trying to put Hughes Net behind me.By the way, my Wildblue service (which is slower than Hughes Net) has NEVER stopped working.
Good luck to all of us who don't have DSL, Cable, or Cellular in our area. We are held captive by these big corporations who can get away with what ever they want.
