Efax
J2 "Free" service a scam

Internet & Web

EFax has a very unique way of offering a "free" service that they can weasel you out of whenever they please. I understand that "free" services are always a means of companies to entice you to get a pay service, and I don't really have a problem with that. I do, however, have a problem with underhanded tactics to prevent you from actually taking advantage of an offered "free" service.

It works as follows: eFax offers you a free fax-receipt phone number, and it forwards your faxes to your email. Great! If you don't use fax much but would like to be able to give a number to colleagues and friends for an occasional fax, it sounds great. But it doesn't work that way. Because the eFax Free account has a seemingly reasonable limit of 20 pages of incoming faxes in any given 30 day period, they can simply deluge you with spam faxes (they claim to not be able to block faxes from unidentified numbers, conveniently) and then inform you that you have to upgrade to the pay service.

If you've already made the mistake of giving your eFax Free number out to anyone, you're screwed. The only way to keep that number is to pay US$12.95 and then US12.95 a month in order to continue to receive faxes. I'm sure if you do that, they'll push you over that account's limits so that you have to upgrade to the next tier.

There's no such thing as a free lunch, the saying goes, but underhandedness of this sort is really nauseating.
