Warranty charges for damaged not incurred by me

I received a free upgrade. The pantech 610c did not display images after 3 days. I called warranty and they sent me a new phone and instructed me to return the broken phone. I did so and about 30 days later I received a letter saying I now owe them $245 because the phone was chewed up, smashed ect. When in fact the phone was brand new and had absolutely ZERO damage to it when I returned it in the mail. (It simply did not display).
So when I call them they refuse to remove the charges and I am now held responsible for something I did not do.
