Unfair business practises - unauthorized charges

Internet & Web

I purchased a Christmas gift for my daughter of an annual subscription from Questia.com on Dec 12. On Dec 11 Qustia took another annual subscription. On Dec 30 I cancelled the subscription and requested a refund but was refused. After much negotiation, several online cancellation attempts on my account resulted in a 2009 confirmation notice, instead of 2008. Questia finally "offered" what they called a prorated refund of $50.00. The actual prorated amount should be $95.02 if it were based on my actual cancellation date but should have been 99.95 for the year. Because I'd given up already and involved my credit card Questia said "The prorated refund previously offered is no longer valid as the charges were disputed". Most concerning, is that the Questia website provides NO WAY of removing my financial Visa data from the records held at Questia - their web site does not give me access to this information! And they told my visa I'd used the service for the new subscription period which of course I hadn't, except to try to cancel numerous times.

Here are the ripoffs that Questia is doing;
1. The questia web site does not permit non-renewing subscriptions - even for one-time gifts and refuses a refund of the subscription amount they took in advance even when cancellation is made - in my case within days of the beginning of the next annual subscription period.
2. The "terms" they live by were not presented for approval for the "gift" subscription. I was required to enter my visa and other personal information to create the account, without being asked to review any terms.
3. I did not receive any advance or post-notice that an amount was to be taken from my visa statement for another annual subscription.
4. I did not authorize a second annual subscription amount to be taken from my visa (although their hidden "terms" say it is renewable).
5. The web site does not permit the entry of a "date of cancellation", nor does it provide the user any evidence that they processed a cancellation. There is no cancellation transaction number or transaction date or even an account number shown.
6. The web site does not permit a transfer to a monthly subscription - it appears that it MIGHT, but takes you to the create a new subscription screen and I sure didn't want another charge to my visa.
