Symantec Corp Norton software War narrowly averted Rip-off Internet

What a deal! I just ordered and paid for (on the internet by charge card) Norton virus software by Symantec Corp. The previous program wasn't compatable with Windows XPpro, which I had recently loaded.

The download went uneventfully. Then the 'install';continuous error messages including "Error 1406" which led to a continuing circle of "uninstall, download updates, and reinstall program". (repeat 'till you drop) The polite female from whom I made the ('phone) purchase said: "any problems, we're here 24/7".

After four hours of screwing with the download not installing without error messages (from Symantec) and refusing to run, I called the same number for assistance. WRONG MOVE! I was very quickly told that number was for orders only.

I was then directed to call 900-646-0007 @ $2.95 per minute, or 800-927-3991 for $29.95 per assistance call. While on the 'phone I continued to attempt to install the 'patches' necessary to make the software run that I had just purchased just hours earlier.

Magically, while still on the 'phone, I finally noticed the installation AGAIN starting, and... Holy cow! It is running!
Software up and running!

The only point of this missive is to comment on Symantec's "customer service". It takes balls to ask a customer to make a $29.95 'phone call to resolve a problem on hours old software which was purchased for $29.95. A problem apparently exists with Norton 2003 Anti-virus running on Windows XP, hence the necessity for the patch downloads immediately after purchasing the program. What's wrong with THIS picture?

Meaningful customer service is difficult to find. It was dead and buried years ago.
