PWE Auction This company is gaining access to our credit card info from somewhere

I've gone through all the things that everyone else has gone through. The first "trial" charge. The 49.90 monthly subscription fee. I've never signed up for a trail charge for anything. I've been doing ebay auctions for years with no "ebay toolkit" subscription or free trail. I don't need it, so this is obviously not me. I called and talked to the guy, who told me about the police report, etc. He said most people just didn't remember they signed up. Of course they didn't remember, because they never signed up!

Ok, so I'm trying to figure out HOW my info was compromised.

I DO have a Paypal account that, through email coincidentally asked me to update my credit card info recently. I'm wondering if this is how they got access to my credit card info? My goal is to figure out why all of us who've never even gone to any website such as this has had our security codes compromised.

Could it be those of us who've stayed at a certain hotel? My charges came while I was recently on a trip to NYC. Anyone else have anything similar? I've gathered that these people are taking our money and making money off the interest, and then refunding it back after a long-drawn-out procedure. They also make money on those of us who assume the charges must be something their spouses put on there. So either way, this fraud is making them money. It seems they have more rights than we do in trying to prove that its not US, it's them. Hopefully a savvy investigator will be able to shut this scam down and put these people behind bars.
